Craig Luschenat - Devin Booker

Devin for his career shoots 37% from three and 39% from 16 feet to the three-point line. I am going to start by saying Devin takes the toughest shots out of any player I have ever studied in the NBA and that includes the likes of Curry, Durant, Thompson. Devin does some really good things that allows him to be a very good shooter. First, he rarely drops his hands, which I would argue is the most vital fundamental to being an elite shooter. Also, he does a good job keeping his feet on balance and has an unbelievable amount of good misses at 49%. This is the third highest good miss percentage I have seen. I truly believe if he didn’t take so many difficult shots he would already be shooting into the 40’s from three.
There are a couple small things Devin should continue to work on to improve as a shooter. The most obvious area of improvement would be the lean in his shot at 38% of his misses. I wouldn’t try to eliminate it from his shot, but I would try to mitigate how often he does it. To clarify I only count the times he fade/leans when he could of shot the ball normal, but didn’t; he obviously fades much more than 38% if you were looking at all the shots he takes. The other small area of improvement is in his gather; he has a tendency to be lax in his approach to receiving the ball. All elite shooters hard 1/2 step into their shot to create lift and balance.
Breakdown: Per 100 Missed Shots:
  1. Dropped Hands:  11% of the time he missed.
  2. Leaning/Fading Back:  38% of the time he missed.
  3. Feet off Balance:  12% of the time he missed.
  4. Good Misses:  49% of the time he missed.
  5. Missed Short:  28% of the time he missed.
  6. Weak/No-Step into Shot:  25% of the time he missed.
